![]() Sandman" (# 13), soon followed by "Silver Bell" (# 15), a guitar duet with Hank Snow. Early in 1955 he scored his first country hit with a cover of the Chordettes' pop hit "Mr. In 1953, RCA issued Chet's debut album, a 10-inch release called "Gallopin' Guitar", the first of a long series. Meanwhile, Chet's own recording career was gradually picking up steam. ![]() Steve Sholes also used Atkins as a session man and soon as a supervisor of Nashville RCA sessions when Sholes couldn't get away from the New York office. Sure enough, Rose employed Chet on several MGM recordings with Hank Williams ("Cold Cold Heart", "Jambalaya", "Kaw-Liga" et al.). Before moving to Nashville in 1950, Chet had received assurances from music publisher Fred Rose that he could make use of him on sessions. The Carters and Atkins were offered a slot on the Grand Ole Opry in 1950, which they kept for several years. Next, Atkins worked as a guitarist for Homer & Jethro, then the top country comedy duo, before teaming up with Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters in 1949. It was soon apparent that Chet's prowess with the guitar far exceeded his vocal capacities. Though all were eventually released, none of them made a splash on the charts. Of the eight songs recorded during his first RCA session on August 11, 1947, five were vocal numbers with Chet singing and three were instrumentals. He made his first record in 1946 for the Bullet label ("Guitar Blues"/ "Brown Eyes Cryin' In the Rain") and was signed to RCA in 1947 by Steve Sholes, as a singer and guitarist. During the 1940s he moved from one radio station to another, before finally settling in Nashville in 1950. He also mastered the fiddle, but the guitar was always his favourite instrument.īy the time he left school in 1941 he was an accomplished guitarist and started performing on radio WNOX in Knoxville, TN. A shy, sickly child, Chet suffered from severe bouts of asthma that left him plenty of time to sit quietly with his guitar. Chet never had guitar lessons as such he would watch and listen to other guitarists and work out licks for himself. Apart from his brother, Chet's main influences as a guitarist were Les Paul, Django Reinhardt and, most of all, the finger-picking style of Merle Travis. Chet watched Jim play the instrument and at five he started playing an old ukelele. His father was an itinerant music teacher, his mother sang and played piano and his half-brother, Jim Atkins (twelve years his senior), was a professional guitarist. (Check out his amazing Bach performance at the bottom of the YouTube list below.)Ītkins grew up in the hills in a tiny, remote eastern Tennesssee town called Luttrell. He also recorded jazz, folk, pop, Latin American and classical music. Yet, country music was always only part of what Atkins did. Many hit records that he produced during his days at RCA are now classics. As a producer he was the key architect of the 'Nashville Sound', a smooth, polished style that made country music acceptable to a wider audience, at a time that the overpowering surge of rock 'n' roll was threatening to sweep it under. As a guitarist he is one of the most recorded instrumentalists in music history and he was an influence on countless pickers, from Duane Eddy to George Harrison. The importance of Chet Atkins can hardly be overstated. ![]() Born Chester Burton Atkins, 20 June 1924, Luttrell, Tennessee

![]() They're pretty, at least, thanks to locations like dim speakeasy interiors and luxurious gambling houses, but they’re chokepointed, poorly laid out, and offer very little tactical variety. It's the maps that really kill the combat. There are balance issues, like one-hit kills from sniper rifles and surprise damage from unavoidable dynamite attacks, but there's fun at the tactical core. There's also a half-or-full-cover system you'll recognize from every tactics game since 2012, well implemented here, with angle of attack and distance mattering depending on what weapon you're using: a shotgun does best from within two tiles, a rifle from seven or more, and a submachine gun is happiest somewhere in the middle. It's just enough randomness to make the weapon stats and upgraded rarities really matter. Basic combat numbers are pretty granular, with health in the 50-150 range, so a thug might take two to four pistol shots to go down. The tactical battles are built on good bones: Gangsters have a to-hit stat, hit points, and you find weapons with varied stats. Interacting with the characters of the '20s is where Empire of Sin shines, but the fights you're doing to earn those stories quickly become rote due to mindlessly repetitive maps and poor, buggy combat AI. ![]() Those might be fights with rival gangs, groups of independent thugs, and very occasionally even the police or the Bureau of Prohibition's agents. You direct your chosen gang boss around the city, doing missions with bits of flavorful dialogue to enjoy and controlling a crew of hired guns in battles against other gangsters. Like many of Empire of Sin’s ideas, it's a brilliant concept: You have to keep a lot of violent people with poor impulse control both happy and alive in turn-based tactical RPG combat in the vein of XCOM. (They're in love.) The charm wore off a lot quicker than I’d have liked, though.įights quickly become rote due to mindlessly repetitive maps and poor, buggy combat AI.The challenge here is to run a complex illegal empire while also balancing the chaotic personalities of criminals both in your gang and outside it. There's even really delightfully over-the-top voice acting for nearly every character, littered with standout performances like gangster boss Frankie Donovan, aged Western sharpshooter Grover Monks, or the hammy duo performance of a gambling bookie and a button man. The writing and weird cast of characters, both fictional and fictionalized alike, have a lot of charm. For what it’s worth, Empire of Sin really embraces the Roaring ‘20s style, showing off Chicago streets that are initially fun to navigate and a roaring soundtrack of jazz mixed with some more modern pieces. Lower your hand so that your hand and the stick sit a few millimeters above the drum head.Try to let the stick bounce back up again if you’re able to. Play a normal stroke from a normal height.Start by taking the stick in your stronger hand.Let’s try it now. If you’re able to, sit at your kit or your practice pad, and we’ll dive in. This technique is the easiest way to make the stroke extra quiet, especially when we’re trying to do this in the context of a fast-paced groove. By keeping the stick low, we’ll make the stroke more gentle anyway. ![]() Instead, we need to focus on keeping the stick very low and very close to the head. We shouldn’t be thinking about velocity at all. We shouldn’t try to play ghost strokes by hitting the snare gently. Remember: when drumming, dynamic variation tends to come from the height of the stick, rather than the velocity of the stroke. Now we’ve talked a bit about ghost strokes, how the heck do we play them? Well-again-the answer is simple in principle but a little trickier in practice. Ghost strokes may not help you if you need to create a massive moment in a big rock track, but generally speaking, it’s good to utilize them when needed. ![]() Ghost strokes create the perfect combination of energy and space. Like being hit gently and repeatedly over the head with a small rubber mallet, it could quickly become irritating at best and painful at worst!īy making some of the snare notes into ghost strokes, we retain the energy of snare independence, but we allow other instruments to take the spotlight. Playing this way could quickly become overwhelming to the listener. You’d have a song that’s rammed full of notes, all competing for space. Imagine if all of the snare hits on this track were loud. They’re there, and they’re not there-all at the same time. If you listen even more closely, you’ll also hear some faint snare hits which sit underneath everything else. When you listen closely to the drum groove, you’ll hear loud hi-hat, kick drum, and snare drum notes. It all feels pretty close to tribal, and in this case, that’s a great thing! There’s not much emphasis on melody here. You’ll hear the track has a powerful rhythmic impetus from the bass, guitar, and vocal. Take a listen to Can’t Stop by Red Hot Chilli Peppers below. A ghost stroke will sit at the back of the mix and barely be perceptible to the ear, but it’ll make a big difference to the overall feel of a track. This is because listeners tend to ‘feel’ a ghost stroke rather than hear it. The truth may be a little plain, but – like many things in drumming – it’s a bit more complicated than that in reality. Simply put, a ghost stroke is just a very, very soft stroke. Despite their cool name, ghost strokes are not at all mysterious-sorry! It’s only fair to warn you: this is going to be an anti-climax. This is where ghost strokes can be essential. This is especially true if we’re dealing with a busy arrangement that contains a bass guitar, guitar, keys, vocals, and so on. Nevertheless, if you’re playing these grooves fast, they can quickly start to feel cluttered in most genres. These types of loud, ‘busy’ grooves work well when you’re playing metal-or perhaps playing a track with a slow tempo. There are a lot of notes flying around in there. ![]() If you were going to criticize them, though, you’d maybe say they’re a little bit full-on. They’re all reasonably lively, intricate, and interesting. Legend has it that ghost strokes are regular strokes that died and now roam the earth looking for drum kits to haunt.ĭespite their creepy name, ghost strokes are among the funkiest, grooviest techniques in all of Drum Land. This time of year was made for spooky stories – I watched one play out on Netflix just last night – so it seems fitting that we’re covering ghost strokes today. The coolest name for any technique on any instrument ever invented. If you click and make a purchase, I get a small commission. That brings me to another Expanse/Nebulous similarity: Radar is an essential part of your tactical suite, as is the electric warfare designed to counteract it. Any ships caught in these stunning explosions (I still gasp every time) will be heavily damaged and nearby ships’ radar will be temporarily scrambled. And just like in The Expanse, If you’re not careful (or just unlucky) your fusion reactor can go critical and your spaceship will temporarily be replaced by a small star. Luckily, just like the Rocinante has Amos Burton, you’ve got engineers who can repair and rebuild injured components mid-battle. Speaking of wounds - their locations matter! Instead of a single health bar, all of your ship’s systems have actual physical locations on your ship (complete with their own hitboxes) and can be individually damaged by enemy fire. A fusion reactor meltdown is truly a sight to behold. If one flank gets chewed up during a fight, you can also rotate your ship to protect its wounds. Not only do you need to move your ships in six directions, but your ship might need to roll itself in order to properly line up its railguns. To that end, you have to start thinking in terms of 3D space. Of course, The Expanse isn’t the first sci-fi series to use a “braking burn”, but it effectively sets the same tone: This is hard sci-fi, with an emphasis on realism. This feeling starts from the very first moments of battle, when your ships enter the battlefield with their engines seemingly pointing the wrong direction. It also feels like an Expanse RTS in everything but name. ![]() The controls can be finicky in their immense complexity, but that’s only in service of giving you the widest possible set of tactics to choose from. You command a small fleet of spaceships, giving attack orders and movement commands in all six directions. Recently released into Steam Early Access, Nebulous: Fleet Command is an exceptionally deep, fully 3D, real-time strategy game. What can possibly fill the Roci shaped hole in my heart? For now, the answer is Nebulous: Fleet Command. Both the nine-book series and six-season TV show came to a close in December and January, respectively. Like many fans of The Expanse, I’m feeling a little lost right now. |
